报告题目:Warm-Water Intrusions Trigger Seasonal and Interannual Thinning, Speedup of the Largest Tidewater Glacier in Greenland

报告摘要:

         Jakobshavn Isbrae (JI), the largest tidewater glacier in Greenland, has sped up during recent decades following a major, ocean warm-water intrusion event, has lost the bulk of its ice shelf, and is in the midst of rapid retreat. It is known that the seasonal dynamics of tidewater glaciers respond to seasonal fluctuations in ocean temperatures. However, it is unknown whether external ocean conditions continue to play a role for a tidewater glacier already in the midst of rapid retreat, such as JI, where internal glacier dynamics might be thought to be dominant. We observe that, in the absence of an ice shelf, seasonal and interannual varying ocean warm-water intrusions still lead to grounding line retreat, rapid thinning at the terminus, and speedup of the glacier.  Moreover, we find that the glacier responds to ocean temperature change on a relatively fast (~ 100 days) timescale, thus underpinning the ocean’s role in modulating both seasonal and interannual variations in glacier behavior.  This fast response to warm-water intrusions indicates that outlet glaciers, even those in retreat such as is the present case for JI, remain sensitive to ocean temperature change.

王显威,博士,男,纽约大学阿布扎比分校 New York University Abu Dhabi)全球海平面变化研究中心(Center for global Sea Level Change)研究科学家 Research Scientist)。2012年毕业于中国科学院遥感应用研究所,在北京师范大学 2012.9 -2014.11)、俄亥俄州立大学 2013.2-2013.7)以及纽约大学阿布扎比分校(2013.10-2015.10)从事过极地冰川变化相关的博士后研究工作。其主要研究领域为全球气候/海洋变化背景下的极地冰川变化,主要采用光学遥感,雷达遥感以及星载-机载高度计数据探测南极和格陵兰岛冰川的立体变化,并且结合大气以及海洋观测数据以及耦合模型进行驱动力变化分析。先后分别在2009-2010 2016-2017)随中国(韩国)南极科学考察队参与中国中山站(韩国Jang Bogo站)周围的南极科学考察,并于20178月随纽约大学参加格陵兰岛东西两岸JakobshavnHelheim冰川与海洋实地观测项目,具有丰富的极地考察经验。王显威在AGU, EGU, IUGG 以及IGS 组织的国际会议上多次进行口头报告以及展报交流,担任Remote Sensing of Environment等数个国际期刊审稿人,在The Cryosphere以及Remote Sensing of Environment等国际期刊发表SCI文章17篇。
